A splendid Norman keep, built in 1140 by the famous deVeres, Earls of Oxford. Approached by a lovely Tudor bridge and visited by Kings Henry VII and VIII and Queen Elizabeth I and besieged by King John. Beautiful grounds, peaceful woodland and lakeside walks, all beside a medieval village with a fine Norman church. There are four floors to explore, including a magnificent Banqueting Hall spanned by a remarkable 28 foot arch, one of the largest Norman arches in England. A good view of this splendid room can be obtained from the Minstrels' Gallery, built within the thickness of the 12 foot walls.
